TCL 55P20US Android TV Review

TVs models come and go and in many ways, those that have gone by the wayside have not been the best in terms of design nor technology. Over the past 20 years, AV technology has come a long way and so have operating systems that run it, writes Milo Boyd. In the case of TCL 55P20, the Android OS made me very curious, but I must say that I was pleasantly surprised.

The TV itself. TCLs 55P20US Android TV is a true High Definition 4K TV and has a typical resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels, a viewing angle of 178° H/178° V and a 4000:1 contrast ratio. Using an Android M Operating System powered by a Quad Core CPU, the TCL TV has USB PVR Function with Time shift; it has access to Freeview Plus Certified, Googlecast, GoLive 3.0, Netflix, Google Play Store, Dual Band Wi-fi and USB Media Player. With 2xHDMI inputs, 1 x AV input and standard component video input, headphone output & SPDIF optical output as well as access to the Google Play Store, this TCL Android TV has all the bells and whistles like any other TV.

Let’s get our hands dirty. As mentioned the TCL 55-inch is a High Definition TV with a resolution of 3840 pixels by 2160, which is perfect for a 55-inch sized screen. Dimension-wise, the TV looks very stylish and has a 138.7cm display (the metric conversion for 55 inches) that is surrounded by a thin bezel, which just 13mm wide at the top. The panel uses LCD technology with dynamic LED backlighting, giving it a clean, clear and crisp picture. Overall, the picture and the sound were quite good- in fact, much better than I expected from a sub-$2000 Flatscreen.

Set up. Setting up this TV was so easy that it was almost ridiculous. In fact, it was so easy to set up, there is nothing more than I can write about it. And yes the TCL 55-inch can be wall mounted if you so choose.

Performance . Performance is the best part of the TCLs 55P20US Android TV. The TCL is by all accounts a Smart TV and has similar apps to the leading brands. Android phone control- this is perhaps the coolest part of this TV and the one that makes this TV stand out. Sure you can do this with other TVs and phones but the difference here is that the TV and phone share the same OS. But getting back to the performance of this 400hz TV, all I can say that watching the following programs gave a real indication of this TVs quality.

Device connectivity The following devices were connected and used successfully with the TCL 55-inch TV:

1. Sony DVD player
2. Foxtel box
3. Panasonic Bluray
4. Nintendo game console
5. Sony PS4
6. Generic speakers
7. Satellite receiver

Mobile Phone control. One of the best things about this TV is the ability to control it via your mobile phone. Talk about easy- download the app, pair it with your phone and viola - your mobile phone is now a remote control. And on top of that, you can use voice-activated controls as well. This was not only fun, but also practical-I mean, you might lose the remote control, but your phone, well that’s another thing altogether.

The final word. This is a great TV that looks good, works well, can be connected with any device and can be controlled with a mobile phone. Together with its very competitive price tag, this TV should be on your list of TVs to have a look at next time you are in the market for a new Flatscreen TV.
