Sony’s US Playstation website has been hacked by cybercrims intent on defrauding customers by tricking them into purchasing malicious software.

Visitors to Sony’s official PlayStation site are being warned about the security risks after fraudsters managed to hack the the security of the site last week.

The code embedded by the hackers told site visitors that there were new anti virus precautions in place and then urged them to perform a (bogus) virus scan. The scan would then alert customers that they had been infected with a virus and urge them to purchase a (fake) anti virus software which then stole confidential data from their computer.

Recent visitors to the website have been urged to download the latest security updates for their anti-virus software and be wary of download requests.
