Samsung has finally unveiled the latest update to its Exynos 5 chipsets that will allow the SoC to use all 8 cores at the same time.

The new Exynos 5 Octa big.LITTLE chip (present in the Galaxy S4) will now be able to run all 8 cores simultaneously or in any desired combination thanks to a technology called Heterogeneous Multi-Processing.

The chip is still configured the same as its predecessor, which consists of four Cortex A15 processors (big) and four Cortex A7 processors (little). Samsung hopes to deploy the new Exynos 5 Octa big.LITTLE HMP solution in Q4 this year.

As for those Galaxy devices that are currently using the Exynos 5 Octa chip, specifically the 5410 and 5420 chips, Chinese manufacturer Meizu (who is currently using Samsung’s chip for its MX3 smartphone) has confirmed that these chips can also utilise the HMP technology via a software update.

If that’s the case, it’s very likely that past Galaxy devices will be receiving an update soon.
