Back in November, rumours spread that Instagram maybe looking to build a messaging feature in its mobile app. Today, we see the confirmation of those rumours as Instagram took off the wraps of Instagram Direct at an event in New York City.

The new feature will come to Instagram users as an update and will appear in the form of an inbox at the top. With Instagram Direct, users will be able to choose whether to publicly post their photos to their timeline and let all their followers see their photo or video, or select an individual or group to send the photo to.

Recipients of the message can then comment, like or start a conversation with the sender of the image or video. It’s basically similar to commenting on an Instagram photo but with the added privacy.

Users may also receive images and videos from people outside their network, but these files will initially appear as invites and user will have to decide if he will accept or reject the invite. The update is now available both on Android and iOS.
