Google’s Chief Information Officer Douglas Merrill has announced he will be leaving the search engine giant for a new role that will seen him head up EMI’s digital unit.

Merrill is tipped to be starting his role as President of the EMI Music Group’s digital arm later this month. With album sales plunging from 14.3 billion to 10 billion over the last decade, the move comes at a time when the industry is seeking all avenues of exploring new revenue streams; pinching a Google Chief could be just the ticket to give the embattled label the heads up on the competition.

Industry insiders believe that Merrill’s experience with Google could provide EMI with significant insights when it comes to devising the company’s online strategy. Will Merrill’s Google inspired attitudes of fair use see him at loggerheads with a record label whose objectives often mean the exact opposite? Only time will tell…
