This news could not come at a better time for Twitter as it prepares for its initial public offering (IPO) – it is now the most important social networking site for teens in the United States.

In the past Facebook has been the premier site, however a recent survey carried out by financial firm Piper Jaffray showed that Facebook is preferred by 23 percent of respondents while Twitter sneaks ahead with 26 percent.

With more than 8000 people taking part in the survey, that is a reasonably comprehensive win to Twitter. However there is sme good news for Facebook in that its executives know a good deal when they see it, with the recent acquisition of photo-sharing website Instagram turning out to be a great investment. Its popularity has risen from 12 percent in mid 2012 to be equal with its new stable-mate on 23 percent.

Statistics aside, both Twitter and Facebook are both ahead of Google, which is trying desperately to find its niche in the social networking space. Yet figures show that it has dropped form six percent popularity in September 2012 to five percent in April 2013.
